Roller Drome

I have shot roller skating a few times in my brief time as a photojournalist. The smell of a roller rink is one of the most memorable to me. Takes me right back to Skate Plaza in North Idaho. What is it about them that makes everyone smell the same? I was in Nampa doing some work for a special publication of a paper I shoot for and this was one of my stops. Josh Lenty owns this place with his father. He grew up as a speed skater and now owns his own rink. I don’t think I want one but sounds like a dream come true for him. The place was built in 1948 and still kicking.

Last week I went on a shoot at a steel manufacturing company. The writer was conducting the interview in the break room and I found this. The whole place seemed to have been decorated by the CEO's wife.

Takes me back to my welding days. I was going to school to become a welder before I came a photographer. Weird to think this could have been a photo of me.

Here we have Rob Roberts, CEO of R & M Steel. Great beard and real nice guy. They are doing the story because he has donated so much to communities and schools.

This huge painting hung in the lobby. Every successful businessman/beard owner should have one of these.

Salty Roll

Here are a few frames from a roll of film I shot over the summer. Just got it developed not long ago. It’s fun to get it back and forget what you had taken photos of. We made the detour to Bonneville Salt Flats on our way home from Salt Lake after a concert. In order: Matt, Dusty, Andy, Myself and Zach.

Here I am as a 24 year old who just finished college. There is this talk about the difficulties of finding work once you are done with school. Over the last few years I’ve had to turn down assignments because my plate was full. So now that I’ve finished school I thought I would just let the publications I freelance for know that I have more time than ever and that would ramp things up.

But that hasn’t been the case. The well is dry.

I’m not putting the blame on others for the lack of work, but I have to remain proactive in working toward the end goal. I feel that all the pieces are in place to take the next steps toward becoming the shooter I want to be. I read about all of the great stories being told and the photographers shooting things that are helping to change the world. That is what I want to use my talents on.

So here is what I’m thinking. The 6 degrees of separation (or Kevin Bacon) has now become 4.74 with social media. You all know people who know people who know people who work for New York Times. Am I at that level yet? Hell no. But am I past getting shut down on shoots for $25? You bet. The hope is that this is a one-time push to get some help from you guys and get my name out there a bit. I’m most happy when I have camera in hand. It doesn’t have to be shooting for some huge newspaper, but it has to be shooting.

Sharing this website with some people you know or linking to me on Facebook or Twitter would go a long way. Everything is on here. Portfolio, resume and some bad grammer to accompany the photos. I’m a well-rounded shooter and can supply a portfolio for most applications. I may not post it here but I bet I’ve shot it. So please start sharing with people that you think might have some photo needs or know the right people.

I’m up for shooting most things in most locations. Have camera, will travel.

Editorial, product, architecture, music, wedding, sports, travel. Lets shoot it.

Last month was the most traffic that has come ever come to the blog. It also was a busy month on my end. It’s a no-brainer that more content=more traffic but its hard at times. Anyway, thanks for coming by. This is also my 100th post. Don’t know if that goes back to the twoforjoy days or just on glandberg.com but seems like lots of rambling from me either way. Have a good week.

I will leave you with this. My friends Zach and Willow did a switch-a-roo on an old classic for Halloween this year.

Steve Burbank and Steven Foust rest atop a section of ponderosa pine they harvested from a downed tree.

I was just leaving a day of hiking and relaxing at Crater Lake, Oregon. Driving down some two lane road with the sun setting I happened to look over to catch this scene. I drove past and about half mile down the road and just knew I had to turn around.

These are the men behind this huge log. From what I could gather they had go the log for the family of guy on the left. Both of them live in the general Gilchrist area.

This was a shot from a few days before when they had loaded an even larger section into the bed of the truck.

I loved shooting this. I typaclly have an email with a phone number and I go chase them around to get a photo for the publication. This was like a photojournalism cold call. Dogs everywhere and figuring I was lost as they come. Turns out they are as friendly as anyone I have met on this trip. Hell they even wanted their photo taken and thats lots more then I can say for most of my subjects. More mini-stories to come.

-They said this might last them 3 weeks. Love it.

Maybe I will write a post about my time in Santa Fe. Maybe I won't. I left there and headed west. This is a shot from the Grand Canyon. Its hard going there and having it not feel like an assignment. I knew that it was going to be loaded with tourist and I wanted to show that somehow.

: We have all seen real good photos of the Grand Canyon, so I wanted to do something a bit different. The fact that his shirt says American sold me on this photo. It was one of the most American places I have been.

This is a photo from a hike I went on last night. The elevation here was around 11,500 and the colors just looked great. There was some smoke from area forest fires that added a great depth to the photo.
